Although the recently passed Food Truck Ordinance fell short of actually bolstering street eats, hungry Chicagoans showed up in support at last weekend’s Food Truck Social. Sponsored by Time Out Chicago, Empty Bottle Presents and the West Town Chamber of Commerce, the second annual event featured more than 20 food trucks over two days.
Saturday’s scorching temperatures saw the longest line at ice-cubed, where prosciutto ice cream and Funky Jamaica ice pops (hibiscus, raspberry, and Hum Liqueur) helped attendees keep their cool. More refreshing fare was found in the celebrity chef pop-up food truck, where Chef Michael Kornick (MK, Ada Street) served gazpacho with heirloom tomato, clam, and Laughing Bird shrimp. The ever-popular Luchadores of Tamale Spaceship drew a crowd, whether for their masks or authentic Mexican cuisine. ChiTown Bomber’s chilled BBQ chicken with guava and macadamia nut cole slaw was bomb, and the icing on the cake was provided by morecupcakes and Sweet Ride. Even four-legged guests were treated to doggy desserts by Fido to Go.
Despite setbacks from the city and the elements, the second Food Truck Social illustrated Chicago’s ever-growing appetite for mobile cuisine. Proceeds from the Food Truck Social will benefit the West Town Chamber of Commerce, Commercial Park Advisory Council & Share Our Strength, a national non-profit working to end childhood hunger in America.
