Secret Chicago Printable Calendar – September 2023

Fountain of the Great Lakes by Loredo Taft

Is it just me or is September coming on strong? All of a sudden, my schedule is packed with lots of fun, late summer events. Let’s be honest, it isn’t sweater weather in Chicago just yet.

A busy season makes a stroll through the gardens all the more appealing. This sculpture is located in the Art Institute gardens, but you don’t need to pay admission to admire it. You can view it from the sidewalk on Michigan Avenue

Loredo Taft’s Fountain of the Great Lakes features five nymphs representing lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. Their water flows from one shell to another, just as the lakes flow into each other. It’s a peaceful spot in the heart of the bustling Loop. There’s a crazy story behind the sculpture, but I’ll share that another day…
