Riot Fest is one of the biggest festivals in Chicago. There’s nothing like singing along to your favorite artists—and discovering new ones—while flying high on carnival rides. I’ve been attending Riot Fest since 2012, and have several years of experience photographing the festival, reviewing the performances, and interviewing artists.
Riot Fest is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025. Whether it’s your first time attending the festival or you’re a veteran fan, I’m sharing my best Riot Fest tips.

What is Riot Fest?
Riot Fest is an annual music festival that has taken place in Chicago since 2005. It began as a festival held at multiple venues around the city before moving first to Humboldt Park and then Douglass Park. The three-day festival books more than 90 artists in genres including punk rock, indie rock and hip-hop. Riot Fest draws about 50,000 music fans to the festival.

When is Riot Fest?
Riot Fest typically takes place in mid-September. In 2025, the festival dates are September 19-21. While Chicago’s festival is the permanent location, Riot Fest has also thrown festivals in Toronto, Denver, Dallas, and Brooklyn.

Where is Riot Fest?
Riot Fest takes place in Douglass Park in the North Lawndale community on Chicago’s West Side. Douglass Park’s address is 1401 South Sacramento Drive, Chicago, IL 60623. The main entrance to Riot Fest is located at W. Ogden Ave. & S. Sacramento Dr.
Is Riot Fest Safe?
The media can give Chicago a bad rap, but yes, Riot Fest is safe. In my years of attending, the worst thing I’ve seen is people passing out from dehydration or getting banged up from too much fun in the mosh pit. Download the Riot Fest app to receive alerts about the event.

What is the Riot Fest Lineup and Schedule?
Riot Fest typically announces the festival lineup every spring around April. In 2025, the lineup includes headliners Green Day, Blink-182, Weezer, The Pogues, and The Damned. You can view the full Riot Fest lineup on its website.
The daily schedule for Riot Fest is usually released about four months ahead of the festival in May. While Riot Fest’s gates open daily at 11 a.m., the live music runs from 12 p.m. (11:20 a.m. on Sunday) to 10 p.m. There are five stages at Riot Fest. The Riot Stage is the largest stage where the main headliners will play. Stage names can be confusing since the names all start with the letter “R,” so check out the festival map. The Riot Fest schedule is listed on its website and it includes the set times and stage for every artist each day.

Where to Stay in Chicago for Riot Fest
Riot Fest’s location is easily accessible to plenty of hotels right downtown in Chicago’s Loop and West Loop neighborhoods via the CTA Pink Line train.
Some of the most convenient hotels to stay at in Chicago near CTA Pink Line stops include the Chicago Athletic Association, Pendry Chicago, and Arlo Chicago in the Loop. In the West Loop, I’d recommend The Hoxton, The Emily Hotel, and The Publishing House Bed and Breakfast.
I’ve added a handy map below to check the latest hotel rates in the West Loop neighborhood with quick access to Riot Fest via the CTA train or rideshare. You can also check Chicago hotel rates on Hotels.com, Booking.com, and Expedia or try home rentals (great for bigger groups) on Vrbo.
How to Get to Riot Fest
If you book a flight to O’Hare or Midway Airports and need a taxi or car service, you can also book an airport transfer to downtown.
With easy access to public transit, I don’t recommend driving and parking at Riot Fest. If you must drive, find a parking spot along public transit and take a bus or train the rest of the way.
If you’re coming from the Loop, take the CTA Pink Line to the California stop. This stop is just a few blocks away from the festival’s main entrance, and is the fastest and easiest way to get to the festival. Check the CTA system map to see if your hotel or house rental is near a Chicago train or bus line.
If you’re traveling from the Chicagoland suburbs you can take a Metra commuter rail line to get downtown. If you take the Metra to Ogilvie Transportation Center you can board the CTA Pink Line at the Clinton stop and take it to the California stop. Check the Metra maps and schedules.
My preferred way to get to Riot Fest is by bike. The festival provides a designated bike parking area north of Ogden, between Albany and Sacramento. Note: the festival map shows a former bike area, but I confirmed that the location north of Ogden is the Riot Fest bike parking in 2025. Rad folks from Working Bikes watch your ride while you’re in the park—don’t forget to tip them!

What Are Riot Fest Aftershows?
In addition to performing at Riot Fest, many of the artists on the bill play aftershows at other venues around town. While these shows are affiliated with the festival, they occur outside of the festival grounds.
Whether you missed your favorite act’s set at the festival or you prefer to catch a regular-length performance rather than a festival set, aftershows are a great way to extend the Riot Fest experience. Here is the list of 2025 late night after shows.
If you’re interested in attending an aftershow, I’d recommend purchasing tickets in advance as many will sell out. Check the time and venue location for your aftershow and plan to leave Douglass Park accordingly as some venues are further from the festival grounds than others.

Tips for Riot Fest
1. Listen to Each Artist Before the Festival
Riot Fest delivers an eclectic lineup in addition to your favorite bands. I like to prepare for the festival by listening to one song from each artist on the bill and trying to discover a new favorite. Look up their top songs or listen to this Spotify playlist by Riot Fest highlighting top tracks by the artists playing this year’s festival.
2. Download the Riot Fest App and Screenshot the Schedule
Riot Fest has a helpful mobile app to keep the festival info at your fingertips. It includes information like a map and schedule for the festival. You can “like” acts that you don’t want to miss to create your custom schedule. Download the Riot Fest app on the Apple Store and Google Play.
I recommend taking screenshots of the schedule and saving them as favorites in your phone. When the grounds get crowded later in the day, the Wi-Fi can be spotty, and you don’t want to miss an artist due to poor connection. Set reminders in your phone before your favorite act is set to take the stage to snag a good spot!

3. Arrive Early and Seize the Day
When you arrive at the festival grounds each day, expect to wait in line. Festival employees will scan wristbands on your right wrist and search bags. See the festival website FAQ for a list of allowed and prohibited items. Allow yourself plenty of time to enter the gates ahead of the first act you want to see each day.
Even if the acts you’re excited to see live are later in the day, get to Riot Fest early to soak in the experience. Riot Fest offers a complete carnival experience with rides, games, and attractions that you won’t want to miss. It’s great to get the lay of the land so you know where concessions, bathrooms, and stages are before you need to rush to see a band.
One of the best parts of a music festival is discovering artists that are new to you. Wander over to a stage to catch a musical act that you don’t know. Many artists sound different live, and you might just find your new favorite song.
4. Dress the Part
Dress as comfortable or campy as you feel at Riot Fest. This is the time to see how how high your mowhawk can soar, flash your sleeve of tattoos, and bust out your collection of band tees. While there’s no official dress code at Riot Fest, it’s the perfect time to have some fun with your look.

5. Wear Comfortable Shoes
With multiple stages and a full carnival, the grounds at Riot Fest are huge. You’ll want to factor in running from one stage to another all weekend when choosing your footwear. Take it easy on your feet and wear something comfortable. Remember that you’ll be hoofing it through crowds and porta-potties at best and muddy fields at worst.
6. Prepare for Rain or Shine
Even if you check the weather ahead of time, Chicago can change on a dime. Have your best festival by being prepared for the elements. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and reapply it. If you forget sunscreen, head to the First Aid tent where they will usually provide some for free.
Is the forecast rainy? The show will usually go on unless there is a threat of a severe storm or lightning. Keep a poncho handy so you don’t miss a moment of the festival. You might also need a poncho if you’re planning to be front row for Gwar! Be prepared to get muddy if it does rain.

7. Hydrate
Music festivals can be long days. Don’t forget to drink water in between beers and seltzers. While water is available for purchase, you can also bring your own container. Empty plastic water bottles (like a Nalgene) are allowed but not metal or glass. You can refill your water bottle at free refill stations. CamelBak-style water bladder systems are allowed, but must be empty when you enter and transparent.
You may not know, but most stages have racks of water bottles behind the security gate. Security keeps them close to hand out to folks in the crowd who need them. If you’re stuck in the crowd and in need of water, ask security for a bottle of water or ask someone nearby to pass it to you.
8. Take a Break
Music festivals are long days. When you’re planning your schedule, look for a break to take a seat and relax. Utilize the shady areas under trees in Douglass Park away from the sun that are perfect for chilling out and listening to whoever is playing on the nearest stage. Some of my favorite festival memories are relaxing under a tree with friends rather than cramming into the crowd.

9. Chow Down
All that rocking out will work up an appetite, and fortunately, Riot Fest has dozens of food vendors in multiple areas. From carnival fare like corn dogs to some of Chicago’s best restaurants and vegan options, you won’t go hungry at Riot Fest.
10. Don’t Miss the Rest of the Fest
While the music stages are the main draw, Riot Fest offers an entire carnival of diversions. Take a break to find some shade and support local Chicago vendors. Don’t want to carry your purchases around at the festival? Many vendors will hold your goods to be picked up at the end of the night.
There’s nothing like hearing your favorite band play while whipping around on a carnival ride. Try your luck at carnival games and show off your prizes. Check out the vendors for something stylish to wear to the rest of the festival. Live your best rock and roll carnival life and soak in the last days of summer in Chicago at Riot Fest.
