Surfer Blood performs tonight at The Vic.

The cover of Surfer Blood’s upcoming sophomore album, Pythons, features a skinny kid flexing his guns. Powered by their sunny lo-fi indie pop, the band has certainly buffed up their sound since their 2009 debut. While their first album Astro Turf made waves, the much-anticipated follow-up (due out June 11) takes a giant leap forward in production as the band jumps from recording in a Florida dorm room to a renowned L.A. studio. Lead single “Weird Shapes” promises a more textured, dynamic take on the band’s signature surf rock sound.

On his way out of Austin following an energetic SXSW run, frontman John Paul Pitts found a few moments to speak with Chicago INNERVIEW about recording with The Pixies’ gear and meeting Timbaland in the studio.
